About Face: Portraiture from the Collection

November 25, 2006 - August 1, 2007

Focusing on images of individuals and groups, About Face: Portraiture from the Collection will operate in tandem with the portraiture section of Midwestern Visions--an exhibition of Midwestern  art currently on display at the CRMA. Spanning a greater geography and a greater time frame than Midwestern Visions, About Face will address ways in which portraiture evolved through time, analyzing consistencies of portrayals and noting divergences.

From solitary portraits of people of stature to group portraits of friends or colleagues, the portraits on view as part of About Face represent a full range of portraiture types. Their creators are primarily American or British and the works date from the mid-19th century to the present day. Some figure among the earliest  acquisitions of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art while others reflect more recent acquisitions, continuing a long history of collecting in this genre.
