Seeing and Remembering: Portraits and Their Stories
Seeing and Remembering: Portraits and Their Stories
September 24, 2011 - January 15, 2012
Grant Wood,
Study for Self-Portrait
, 1932, charcoal and pastel on paper, 14 1/2 x 12 in., Museum purchase, 93.11.
Portraiture is one of the oldest forms of art in history, with likenesses of individuals having been made for more than 5,000 years. Portraits, in their many guises, still fascinate us. The exhibition looks at the different genres within portraiture as seen from the vantage point of the artist. Such concepts as the artist and his patron, the artist portraying his own family, the artist making a commemorative portrait of someone he never met, and the many different situations that give rise to portraits are considered. From realistic to conceptual, from famous people to ordinary folks, this exhibition draws upon the extensive portraiture holdings in the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, as well as key loans from local collectors and artists.
This exhibition is supported in part by United Fire Group, The McIntyre Foundation, Mrs. Dee Ann McIntyre, and the Momentum Fund of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

Yes and what about me, me, me.Some of this work is great, but in some areas I think that art crytics have lost there dtoceiirn in todays art world. I realise that the Saatchi gallery is more about experimenting and challenging work at all levels. But nearly all funding seems to go in this dtoceiirn these days. I am not to sure about the longevity of some of the pieces either. I would like to see some traditional or photo realism come back in to fashion and given money. All the best Chris.Any agents or publishers interested in my work Please call..Love you allxxx

I look forward to seeing this exhibition! The perspectives of this portrait show sound very refreshing.
