Under the Big Top: The Circus in Art
Under the Big Top: The Circus in Art
June 20 - August 16, 2009
Marvin Cone,
Waiting for the Parade
, 1935, oil on canvas, Museum purchase, Dorothy Houts Fund, with gift of Winnifred Cone and Family.
In celebration of Iowa’s importance in the development of the circus (the Ringling brothers were from McGregor, Iowa), the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art will install two galleries of circus imagery from its own collection. Chief among those items included will be several paintings by Marvin Cone and prints by Byron Burford. All the works provide a fascinating look at one of America’s favorite summer pastimes.
