For the first time in its history, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art presents an exhibition of science fiction and fantasy art.  This influential art form, which includes images of space travel, super heroes, and dragons amongst others, is relatively uncommon in art museums.  Out of This World coincides with the 40th anniversary of ICON, Iowa’s longest running science fiction and fantasy convention.  This three-day gathering brings together fans of these related genres each year for a variety of fun and educational programs.

Since 1986, ICON has designated an Artist Guest of Honor each year.  Artist Guests of Honor create artwork in a variety of media which often result in prints, posters, comic books, graphic novels, book covers, and video game concept art.  This exhibition focuses on the artistic works of ten of these ICON Artist Guests of Honor and shares this unique art form with both the Museum’s regular audience and the wider community of science fiction and fantasy fans.

This exhibition is made possible in part by Mindbridge Foundation.  Additional support has been provided by the Hotel-Motel Tax Fund, the Program Grant Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Rockwell Collins, the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, members of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, and contributors to the Museum’s Annual Fund.
