Taking Wing: Children’s Book Illustrations of Birds, Bats, and Flying Bugs from the CRPL

December 23, 2010 - April 17, 2011

Miss Evelyn Zerzanek holding Louis Darling's drawing for Beverly Cleary's book Henry and Beezus (1952).
In conjunction with the pop-up book exhibition Wizards of Pop: Sabuda & Reinhart and continuing its long tradition of presenting children’s book illustration as an art form, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art is pleased to present Taking Wing: Children’s Book Illustrations of Birds, Bats, and Flying Bugs from the Cedar Rapids Public Library. Many will remember the hugely popular Hidden Treasure exhibition of 2007, which was the first to focus on the CRPL’s extraordinary Zerzanek Collection of children’s book illustration. This exhibition takes a different look at the collection, culling out images of winged creatures, a frequent motif in children’s illustrated literature. From pterodactyls to roosters, bats to penguins, butterflies to dragonflies, these creatures in children’s books continue to engage and delight readers of all ages.

This exhibition is supported in part by the Momentum Fund of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

I remember having these books. I absolutely loved Louis Darling's drawings. His were my very favorite of all.
