Haunted: Marvin Cone’s Ghosts

September 14 – December 8, 2019

While not as well-known as his friend Grant Wood, Marvin Cone was a highly-respected and nationally exhibited artist during his lifetime. His reputation is still very strong in eastern Iowa and the artist is perhaps best-known for his series of paintings of area barns. A fascinating subset of his work, begun during a sabbatical in 1939, features images of ghosts and shadowy figures set within moody interiors. While some of the figures took on specific names (Uncle Ben), most generically referenced the lives that once occupied those spaces. These evocative works will be the subject of this stand-alone exhibition, timed to coincide with Halloween, All Saint’s Day, and All Soul’s Day.
