A Fun-Filled Summer at the CRMA!
Cedar Rapids, Iowa—The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) has it all this summer! Admission is always free for children 18 and under and we have free admission for everyone on Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. From Doodlebugs to Family Fun Day to SmArt Saturdays to Art Bites, visitors are sure to find a CRMA activity that everyone in the family can enjoy. And the best part is…all of these activities are FREE! Additional details about all of these events and all of our current and upcoming exhibitions can be found at www.crma.org or by calling 319.366.7503.
The CRMA has teamed up with the Cedar Rapids Public Library and the Hiawatha Public Library to introduce another round of preschool classes for your budding artist! Free art classes for preschoolers and their adult companions will be held at 10:30 a.m. on the first Friday (Cedar Rapids Public Library) and the final Friday (Hiawatha Library) of each month. The
Doodlebugs summer mini-series features the great art Masters, inspired by the CRMA’s current exhibition
From Monet to Picasso: The Riley Collection. See the schedule below.
June 25—Action Jackson (Hiawatha Pubic Library)
Create Jackson Pollock-style “fireworks” paintings by playing the Action Jackson game. Prepare to get messy!
July 2—Good Point! (Cedar Rapids Public Library)
We’ll look at Seurat’s famous Sunday Afternoon painting and create Pointillist works of art in no time. Make it a “point” to be there!
July 30—The Artist in Overalls (Hiawatha Pubic Library)
Grant Wood, a Cedar Rapidian artist famous for his painting American Gothic, teaches us to turn trash into art.
August 6—Cloudy with a Chance of Art (Cedar Rapids Public Library)
Marvin, a friend of Grant Wood, is the focus of a new exhibition at the CRMA. His cloud paintings inspire our own chalky landscapes.
August 27—The Leonardo Code (Hiawatha Pubic Library)
We’re turning science into art, just like DaVinci. We may even crack a secret code or two…
September 3—Dancing with Degas (Cedar Rapids Public Library)
Sculptor and painter Edgar Degas was inspired by ballerinas, so we’re drawing dancers, too, with pastels. We might even learn a little ballet!
September 24—Drawing with Scissors (Hiawatha Pubic Library)
Learn how to draw with scissors like Henri Matisse as we learn more about shapes and colors.
Visitors are also invited to join the CRMA across the street in Greene Square Park for a special outdoor
Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Drop by and paint something on our collaborative mural, and visit with local artist. This event is in collaboration with the Freedom Festival’s Imagination! Square.
As if this isn’t enough already, we’ve also got
SmArt Saturdays! Get smart about art and join is on July 3, August 7, and September 4. SmArt Saturdays include a special Creative Connections presentation by a local artist beginning at 10:30 a.m. and then and afternoon of SmArties at 1:00 p.m.—fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.
And, don’t forget, we’ve got
Art Bites too! Join us as CRMA Executive Director, Terry Pitts or CRMA Curator, Sean Ulmer provide a visual twist to the classic sound bite in a 15-minute discussion of one of our exhibitions. All Art Bites programs begin at 12:15 p.m.
July 7—Art Bites “The Grant Wood Window” with Executive Director, Terry Pitts
August 4—Art Bites “Enrique Chagoya” with Curator, Sean Ulmer
September 1—Art Bites “The Malvina Hoffman Bacchanale Frieze” with Executive Director, Terry Pitts
