New Ceramics Exhibition Opening at the CRMA

November 18, 2010
Cedar Rapids, Iowa—The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) is will present, for the very first time, a dedicated exhibition of ceramics from the CRMA’s collection. A Show of Hands: Ceramics from the Collection will open at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2010.

In 2007, Iowa City resident and long-time photographer Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret donated a series of important studio ceramics to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. Dating from the pivotal 1970s and 1980s, these ceramics provided the missing base for the small but growing collection of ceramics at the Museum.

Unknown to many, the CRMA has been slowly and carefully collecting ceramics to build up the decorative arts section of the collection. With key purchases from The Naked Truth: 2004 International Juried Wood Fire Exhibition of 2004-2005, and others along the way, the Museum has continued to build this section of the collection through purchases and donations from artists, especially those in Iowa.

While individual pieces have been included in group exhibitions in the past, a separate, dedicated exhibition of ceramics from the collection has never happened at the CRMA. A Show of Hands celebrates this growing section of the collection, and shares with the public for the first time the extraordinary art produced by these artists.

Join us from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 4 when we’ll have free admission for everyone and a special preview reception for the artists!

A Show of Hands: Ceramics from the Collection is supported in part by the Momentum Fund of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation and is on display through October 9, 2011. For more information, please visit www.crma.org or call 319.366.7503.
