New Exhibition of Pop-Up Book Art Opening at the CRMA

January 05, 2011
Cedar Rapids, Iowa—Celebrated children's books creators Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart are the best-known pop-up book artists working today. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) is pleased to present an exhibition of their work – Wizards of Pop: Sabuda & Reinhart – opening on Saturday, January 22. Admission will be free all day and there will be free Family Fun Day activities too!

Sabuda, originally from Pinckney, Michigan, and Reinhart, originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, work in a shared studio in New York, and the two have created a series of hand-crafted pop-up books that are both intriguing and breathtaking at the turn of every page. Their inventive creations have universal appeal, calling readers of all ages to explore the fantasy of their books.

Wizards of Pop: Sabuda & Reinhart includes more than 80 images from 16 picture and pop-up books. The book art reveals a variety of media and techniques — with picture book illustrations in batik, marbleized paper mosaic, and delicate cut-paper, and pop-up books rendered in pencil, marker, watercolor, acrylic, and linoleum block print. The exhibition features imaginative two-dimensional artworks from such books as Saint Valentine, The Blizzard's Robe, and The Paper Dragon, as well as innovatively engineered three-dimensional pages from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Encyclopedia Prehistorica series, Young Naturalist's Pop-Up Handbook: Beetles and Butterflies, Cinderella, and STAR WARS: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy, among others.

This exhibition is organized by the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, Abilene, Texas, and is supported in part by Diamond V Mills, GreatAmerica Leasing Corporation, Lil' Drug Store Products, and the Momentum Fund, all funds of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. Educational programming is supported in part by the University of Iowa Community Credit Union.

Join us on opening day and celebrate with our Pop-Up Extravaganza! Family Fun Day. Make your own pop-ups, play dress-up, and even meet Matthew Reinhart as he visits his hometown of Cedar Rapids. Art projects (taking place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) will include themed activity stations inspired by books in the exhibition such as Star Wars, Alice in Wonderland, and Wizard of Oz, as well as kids’ dress-up stations, and more! The Ballet Academy dancers will give a special fairy tale ballet performance too.

Matthew Reinhart will also do a special presentation beginning at 2:30 p.m., followed by a book signing. Bring your books from home, purchase them in the Museum Store, or purchase them from Barnes & Noble at their Family Fun Day table.

The Pop-Up Extravaganza! Family Fun Day is sponsored by University of Iowa Community Credit Union.

Wizards of Pop: Sabuda & Reinhart is on display through May 1, 2011. For more information, please visit www.crma.org or call 319.366.7503.
