CRMA Welcomes Children's Book Illustrator Claudia McGehee

March 14, 2011
Cedar Rapids, Iowa— The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) is excited to welcome Iowa City artist and children’s book illustrator, Claudia McGehee for a book signing and presentation on Sunday, March 27 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

In conjunction with the CRMA’s exhibition Taking Wing: Children’s Book Illustrations of Birds, Bats, and Flying Bugs, McGehee will discuss her work and share insights about her most recent book, Where do Birds Live? A freelance illustrator for more than ten years, she uses scratchboard, a medium reminiscent of woodcut prints. Her interests in history, archaeology, and nature frequently find their way into her work, as in the case of this recent book. The presentation will be followed by a book signing.

Taking Wing takes a different look at the Library’s collection, culling out images of winged creatures, a frequent motif in children’s illustrated literature. From pterodactyls to roosters, bats to penguins, butterflies to dragonflies, these creatures in children’s books continue to engage and delight readers of all ages. This exhibition is on display through April 17, 2011.

Also in conjunction with the Taking Wing exhibition, the CRMA has organized a series of Pajama Storytimes. Kids are encouraged to wear their jammies and bring their favorite stuffed animal for a special series of stories in the galleries, along with a simple art project. Kids ages 3 years and up, and their adult chaperones are free.
