Eastern Iowa Arts Academy's Mosaic on Display at the CRMA

March 29, 2011
Cedar Rapids, Iowa— The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) will be the host for a recently completed mosaic of Grant Wood’s Woman with Plants beginning Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Titled, “Grant Wood, Piece by Piece” the tile mosaic was created by a group of students through the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy (EIAA), a private, non profit academy for elementary, middle, and high school students in a wide variety of arts.

EIAA’s Tile Mosaic class was held at Harding Middle School, under the direction of local artists and EAA instructor Sarah Novak. The class was held once a week for six weeks where a core team of Harding Middle School students worked to re-interpret Grant Wood’s Woman with Plants painting, in tile. The large pieces of ceramic were hand built and glazed by the students. Broken tiles were use as well as glass.

“Grant Wood, Piece by Piece” is on display at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art through Sunday, April 17, 2011. After this brief viewing, it will be permanently installed in Harding Middle School here in Cedar Rapids.
