The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art Presents: From Paris to Istanbul; 32 Days; 32 Paintings

Cedar Rapids, Iowa— Join us at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) for American Artists Abroad Now: Contemporary Artists and Travel “From Paris to Istanbul; 32 Days; 32 Paintings” with local artist, Nancy Lindsay on Thursday, March 20 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Traveling in 2003 through France, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Turkey, carrying her painting supplies in a backpack, Lindsay chronicled her entire trip by painting one painting each day. “I always dreamed of such an adventure, but never expected to meet so many interesting people along the way,” says Lindsay. “I discovered there is no language barrier with a painting easel; people everywhere are drawn to watch you.”

That evening Lindsay will present her paintings, along with a slideshow. This event is free and open to the public.

Pick up your CRMA passport at this lecture and attend additional educational programming throughout the course of this exhibition for the chance to win a gift certificate to the Museum Store. The more stamps you receive, the greater your potential prize!

This event is one of several educational activities planned in conjunction with the CRMA’s latest exhibition, American Artists Abroad, 1900-1950. Drawn from the CRMA’s rich permanent collection, this exhibition explores the reasons and effects of contact between artists and European, African, and Asian cultures. Covering a variety of media, the exhibition concentrates on the period between 1900 and the 1950s, considering what sorts of subjects artists chose and what factors influenced their decisions of subject matter and style. Included in this exhibition are a number of works by artists who traveled abroad recording their experiences, such as Ethel Coe, Marvin Cone, Oliver Grover, Bertha Jaques, Charles Keeler, James Swann, and Grant Wood. American Artists Abroad is on view now through May 11, 2008.

This exhibition is made possible by the Richard D. Pinney Exhibition Fund, Bradley & Riley PC, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, the Momentum Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, and members of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
