Art is Elemental - CRMA Summer Camp 2026

Art is Elemental - CRMA Summer Camp 2026
June 22-June 26, 2026
9am to 12pm
$150 for CRMA members, or $175 for nonmembers.
The four elements of nature have always inspired artists, and are often used to create artwork. This summer, our campers will explore artwork on view in the exhibition Elemental: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. Ancient Greeks believed those four elements, in some combination, made up everything on earth, and they weren’t so far off the mark. Everything is made up for matter, and matter exists in four states: solid (earth), liquid (water), gas (air), and plasma (fire). So campers will experiment with all four natural elements, and watch how the states of matter change, to create artwork. It’s part science, part art, and all fun! From turning sound waves into visible patterns, to using the power of the sun to create artwork, to creating paint from natural pigments, to allowing water to perform beautiful feats of magic, this summer’s camp is sure to amaze and delight! Camp is open to children currently in grades 2-5. Space is limited, so reserve your spot early! To register, contact Education Director Erin Thomas at ethomas@crma.orgor call 319-366-7503.

Art Lovers Book Club, Thunderclap: A Memoir of Art and Life and Sudden Death by Laura Cumming, Free

In 1654, the Thunderclap—an enormous explosion at a gunpowder store—devasted the city of Delft, killing hundreds of people, including the extraordinary painter Carel Fabritius, and injuring thousands more.

Framing the story around the life of Fabritius, Cumming illuminates this extraordinary moment in art history while also writing about her own father, a painter. Like Dutch art, the story gradually links country, city, town, street, house, interior—all the way to the bird on its perch, the blue and white tile, the smallest seed in a loaf of bread. The impact of a painting and how it can enter our thoughts and influence our view and understanding of the world is the heart of this book. Cumming has brought her unique eye to her most compelling subject yet. (Amazon)

Art Lovers Book Club, Becoming Mary Sully: Toward an American Indian Abstract by Philip J. Deloria, Free

Dakota Sioux artist Mary Sully was the great-granddaughter of respected nineteenth-century portraitist Thomas Sully, who captured the personalities of America’s first generation of celebrities (including the figure of Andrew Jackson immortalized on the twenty-dollar bill). Born on the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota in 1896, she was largely self-taught. Steeped in the visual traditions of beadwork, quilling, and hide painting, she also engaged with the experiments in time, space, symbolism, and representation characteristic of early twentieth-century modernist art. And like her great-grandfather Sully was fascinated by celebrity: over two decades, she produced hundreds of colorful and dynamic abstract triptychs, a series of “personality prints” of American public figures like Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth, and Gertrude Stein.

Sully’s position on the margins of the art world meant that her work was exhibited only a handful of times during her life. In Becoming Mary Sully, Philip J. Deloria reclaims that work from obscurity, exploring her stunning portfolio through the lenses of modernism, industrial design, Dakota women’s aesthetics, mental health, ethnography and anthropology, primitivism, and the American Indian politics of the 1930s. Working in a complex territory oscillating between representation, symbolism, and abstraction, Sully evoked multiple and simultaneous perspectives of time and space. With an intimate yet sweeping style, Deloria recovers in Sully’s work a move toward an anti-colonial aesthetic that claimed a critical role for Indigenous women in American Indian futures―within and distinct from American modernity and modernism. (Amazon)

Art Journal Jam with artist Dori Patrick, Fee: $10

Join artist Dori Patrick and a group of like-minded art journalers and journal-curious creatives for an open-studio jam session. $10 per person, payable to Dori Patrick. Please note, this is not a class; this is a casual hang out, where all artistic levels are welcome to come and play. Dori will be on hand to answer questions you might have about getting started, but the time will be yours to experiment and meet fellow creatives. Basic art supplies will be provided for you but you will need to bring your own journal. You are also welcome to bring any of your own journaling supplies that you might want to use: collage papers, paints, markers/pencils/pens, stickers, washi tape. If you like, bring your beverage of choice, or a snack to share with the group. Adults only. Register at least 24hrs in advance by contacting Education Director Erin Thomas at 319-366-7503 or ethomas@crma.org. Jam sessions are held on the third Thursday each month.
