Power and Impact: A Survey of 21st Century Black Visual Arts in Iowa

October 28, 2023 – March 31, 2024

Power and Impact is a partnership between the African American Museum of Iowa and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art designed to explore the contemporary visual arts being produced through the unique perspective of Black artists in Iowa.  From painting to ceramics, visitors will be exposed to visual perspectives responding to socio-economic and cultural issues, identity, race, and historical narratives.  The pieces selected in this exhibit will provide a better understanding of the valuable contributions African Americans continue to make to the visual culture of Iowa.

This exhibition and accompanying educational programming have been made possible in part by the McIntyre Foundation and GreatAmerica Financial Services.  Additional support has been provided by the Program Support Grant Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Iowa Arts Council, which exists within the Iowa Economic Development Authority, members of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, and contributors to the Museum’s Annual Fund.  Annual educational programming has been supported in part by Transamerica.
