Emerging as an independent genre in the seventeenth century, still life paintings were highly symbolic and included all kinds of man-made or natural objects - cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish, game, etc. - that reflected the values of the society and artists that created them. Pairings are based on the "Setting the Table: The Art of Still Life" exhibit at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art this summer. Join Associate Curator Kate Kunau for a discussion of The Grand Tour: Europe Through Artists’ Eyes. The exhibition draws upon the idea of the “Grand Tour” – an actual trip through Europe that wealthy Europeans and Americans took from the mid-1600s to the mid-1900s. The selected artworks from the CRMA’s collection follows artists around European cities, highlighting the churches, sculptures, architecture, ruins, and other places that inspired them.   more >>

If you’re interested in low-commitment art projects that can be as public or anonymous as you wish, even if you don’t consider yourself an artist but you have the creative ‘bug’ to produce something, this is for you. These weekly sessions are just for fun, to inspire you, and to hang out with other creatives. Mixed media can be meditative, silly, sentimental, edgy, or whatever you want it to be.
